Itaipu showcases solutions in energy transition, resilient cities, and bioeconomy at COP30 events

The binational company will share the actions it has implemented in areas aligned with the conference’s Action Agenda pillars. These include delivering a 100% green hydrogen-powered boat to a science development institution in the Amazon and to waste pickers’ cooperatives in Belém

Itaipu Binacional, a world record holder in clean and renewable energy generation, is coordinating four side events in the Blue and Green Zones of COP30. These events address the themes of energy transition, resilient cities, the bioeconomy, and participatory governance. All of these themes align with the conference's action agenda.

Itaipu Binacional is a co-organizer and strategic partner of the Special Secretariat for COP30 (SECOP) and the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) in preparing the conference. The company will also deliver a 100% green hydrogen-powered boat to be operated by waste pickers’ cooperatives in Belém and by FADESP (the Foundation for Support and Development of Research). FADESP aims to foster scientific, social, and technological development in the Amazon. The announcement regarding the vessel, which will be used for selective waste collection on islands near Belém, will take place on November 12, 4:15 p.m. at the Porto do Futuro Pier.

"With more than 40 years of experience in generating clean energy, protecting the environment, developing new technologies, and advancing socio-environmental actions, Itaipu will contribute to the Brazilian government’s strategy for this COP—accelerating the Climate Action Agenda," said the company’s Brazilian General Director, Mr. Enio Verri.

On Tuesday, November 11, Itaipu presents the first event in a series that will take place in the Green Zone. The theme is “Resilient and Inclusive Cities in the Face of the Climate Crisis.” The goal is to present tangible, replicable actions that can help prepare territories to address climate change. Among the participants is Ms. Débora Baía, president of the Concaves waste pickers’ cooperative in Belém. Itaipu supports selective waste collection programs in 255 Brazilian municipalities, including the capital city of Pará, which benefit approximately 4,000 waste pickers.

On Thursday, November 13, a side event in the Green Zone will discuss participatory governance and the 2030 Agenda. This event will bring together government and civil society leaders to explore ways of promoting social participation and integrating public policies with community actions to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Itaipu will share its experience establishing 21 Socio-Environmental Cooperation Hubs. These hubs bring together social actors to make joint decisions on social and environmental initiatives in Paraná and southern Mato Grosso do Sul.

On Saturday, November 15, the program will address innovative solutions for energy matrices in the Blue Zone. The event will cover topics such as Brazil's role in a just and inclusive energy transition. Itaipu is an international benchmark in this area, not only because of its clean energy generation, but also because of its development of innovative solutions in biogas, green hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel, and floating solar power. Additionally, the event will address regulatory frameworks and barriers to promoting these innovations on a commercial scale.

Also in the Blue Zone on Monday, November 17, the event "Forest, Water, and Bioeconomy: Innovation and Sustainability to Address the Climate Emergency," representatives from Itaipu Binacional, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), the Amazonas Sanitation Company (Cosama), and the Socio-Environmental Institute (ISA) will gather. The discussion will focus on generating economic value and social inclusion through the sustainable use of biological resources, as well as public policies and incentive mechanisms.

As part of its research for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Itaipu Binacional’s program includes a presentation on the company’s synthetic oil production project, developed in partnership with Itaipu Parquetec and the German government. The presentation will take place on November 14, 4:30 p.m. at the Itaipu stand in the Green Zone.

Additionally, Itaipu will present the I-REC, an internationally recognized renewable energy certificate that will soon be issued in the Brazilian market (November 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the Porto do Futuro Pier).
