COP30 is the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), an annual global meeting where world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and civil society leaders gather to discuss actions to tackle climate change. It is considered one of the world's key events on the subject.

When and where will COP30 be held?

In November 2025, COP30 will be held in the city of Belém, in Pará State, Brasil.

How important is COP30 for Brasil?

COP30 is a historic opportunity for Brasil to reaffirm its leadership in climate change negotiations and global sustainability. In March 2024, the Brazilian Government launched the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP30 (SECOP), attached to the Office of the Chief of Staff, tasked with coordinating, articulating, guiding, and monitoring the actions of the federal, state, and host cities for COP30. The federal government, through the BNDES, Itaipu, and the federal budget, has so far invested almost BRL 5 billion in infrastructure works for the city of Belém.

How is Brasil preparing to overcome the hosting difficulties in Belém?

The Federal Government has adopted a series of strategies to accommodate the large number of participants expected at the event. Among the main measures are:

1. Partnerships with the Private Sector: The government is promoting collaborations with hotel chains and lodging platforms to encourage the temporary expansion of the supply of rooms, including through the rental of private properties, such as apartments and houses, in models similar to Airbnb.

2. Improving Infrastructure: Investments are planned to improve the city's tourist infrastructure and modernize existing hotels to increase their capacity to receive tourists and delegations, with an investment of more than BRL100 million through Fungetur.

3. Use of Temporary Structures: Alternatives such as floating hotels and cruise ships anchored off Belém's waterfront are being considered as additional accommodation during the event.

4. Expansion to Nearby Cities: The government is also working on strategies to integrate the hotel network of nearby cities, facilitating transportation between these locations and Belém with the improvement of highways and public transportation lines.

5. Encouraging Construction and Renovations: There is encouragement for new investment in the construction of hotels or renovation of commercial buildings for use as temporary accommodation in line with the COP30 deadlines.
