Reporter: On November 6, Belém became the center of the world. At the opening of the Summit, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed heads of state and international leaders who gathered in the heart of the Amazon to discuss the planet’s future. It is the first time in history that a United Nations Climate Conference takes place in the Amazon region, and the Brazilian president emphasized the powerful symbolism of this moment.
President Lula: More than 30 years after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the Climate Convention returns to the country where it was born. Today, the eyes of the world are upon Belém with great anticipation. In the global imagination, there is no greater symbol of the environmental cause than the Amazon rainforest.
Reporter: Lula reaffirmed that COP30 will be the COP of Truth — a time to face climate reality with courage, transparency, and collective commitment. He recalled that 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, milestones that underscore the urgency of global action.
President Lula: 2024 was the first year in which the Earth’s average temperature surpassed one and a half degrees above pre-industrial levels. COP30 will be the COP of truth. It is time to face reality and decide whether we have the courage and determination to transform it.
Reporter: The president also highlighted Brazil’s role in building bridges between nations and blocs, with a focus on climate justice, social inclusion, and sustainable development
President Lula: It will be impossible to contain climate change without overcoming inequalities within and among nations. Climate justice is an ally in the fight against hunger and poverty, against racism and gender inequality, and in promoting a more representative and inclusive global governance.
Reporter: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Lula for his leadership and reaffirmed that the time for action is now.
Guterres: Let us be clear: the 1.5-degree limit is a red line for humanity. It must remain within our reach. What is still lacking is political courage.
Reporter: In closing, President Lula thanked the workers and the people of the Amazon who made the COP possible. From Belém to the world, Brazil issues a call to action: the future is being decided now — and the Amazon is where it begins.
