During the 16th Petersberg Climate Dialogue, COP30 President, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, stressed that COP30 must be a moment for action on sustainable strategies. Held in Berlin, Germany, on March 25–26, the event is one of the most significant in the international climate agenda, serving as a key preparatory meeting ahead of COP30 in Belém, the capital of the Brazilian state Pará.
"For two decades, this Dialogue has been the most important political forum for promoting progress on the global climate agenda," said Ambassador Corrêa do Lago. He highlighted that in this edition, the debates have the peculiarity of achieving results at COP30, "the first COP convened after the year that the world exceeded the 1.5ºC temperature limit set by the Paris Agreement."
From Brasil’s perspective, COP30 must mark a decisive shift. "We have debated, discussed, and negotiated. Now it is time for implementation. The world is watching, the world is waiting," he says.
Cooperation for tangible outcomes
Corrêa do Lago underscored that multilateralism and global governance are essential tools in the fight against climate change in the face of a common global crisis. In this sense, he stressed the urgency of working together for tangible results in implementing climate agreements. "Open and constructive discussions, guided by the spirit of ‘mutirão’ (working together), are essential to address challenges as complex as climate change, whose social, economic, and environmental dimensions are so intertwined," he said.
Traditional Knowledge at COP30
COP30 President highlighted the role of "forest peoples" in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. "Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and quilombolas are the guardians of the land and key actors in our fight against climate change. Their knowledge, traditions, and ways of life are invaluable in our shared journey towards sustainability," said the Ambassador. He stressed that at COP30, these communities will not only be heard, but their perspectives will also guide policies and decision-making strategies.
16th Petersberg Climate Dialogue
The Petersberg Dialogue is one of the few high-level gatherings of climate ministers, bringing together representatives from the most climate-vulnerable nations—including small island states and least-developed countries—alongside G20 industrialized nations.
In 2025, the Dialogue aims to identify opportunities for international cooperation and accelerated migration to zero-carbon landscapes. Another goal is to increase confidence in climate and multilateral efforts, the ministry added. The discussions in Berlin lay the groundwork for upcoming negotiations, with further talks scheduled for June in Bonn, Germany. These efforts will culminate at COP30 in Brasil, where global leaders will seek to turn commitments into action.
