SPECIAL ENVOYS

COP30 Presidency Announces 30 Special Envoys in Priority Sectors and Regions

The envoys will support stakeholder engagement and facilitate communication with different sectors and groups for the climate conference.

On May 14 (Wednesday), the COP30 Presidency announced the names of the 30 special envoys who will engage and listen to priority sectors and regions to ensure the conference's success, which will be held from November 10 to 21 in Belém, Pará.

"The envoys will act as sounding boards for sectors and regions, facilitating the flow of information and insights from their respective areas. We need to hear a lot about expectations in the areas where we have special envoys," said COP30 President Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago.

The Envoys, who will act on a voluntary and personal basis, have been chosen because they are relevant and accredited players in their respective areas. There will be 10 envoys for strategic regions, with a general presence in the regions they represent, and 20 envoys for key sectors.

"The COP30 Presidency is honored to have envoys of this quality helping to build the conference through dialogue and collective action. They will be our voices and ears in strategic sectors and regions, contributing to a collective effort for a strong and effective COP30 that implements climate solutions," said COP30 CEO Ana Toni.

The envoys will facilitate the flow of information and perceptions from the sectors and regions they represent, enabling faster and more effective interactions. They will serve as a direct channel for presenting demands and requests to the COP30 Presidency and as a focal point for their respective sectors and regions.

In addition to the envoys, the COP30 presidency launched four leadership circles in April: the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), the finance ministers' circle, the peoples' circle, and the presidents' circle. Unlike the Envoys, who will act as sounding boards, the Circles will address specific issues and develop products to support the COP30 Presidency.

One objective is to use the diversity of voices to strengthen the call for a Global Task Force against Climate Change. This will involve mobilizing governments, the private sector, civil society, science, and the financial sector, among others, in a collective effort to drive action and ambition. The goal is to create the conditions for a turning point in our fight against climate change.
