This Tuesday, January 21, the UN mission to Belém, in Pará, visited the Hangar Conventions Center and the construction works at the City Park (Parque da Cidade), two of the central venues for the events of COP30 (the United Nations Climate Conference), which will occur in the city from November 10 to 21.

UNFCCC Secretariat Khalid Magzoub described the specificity of having a COP as a “challenging project” due to the size of the conference and the amount of people who participate in the discussions.

"We visit the host country to verify the conditions it offers to host the event. Bringing the COP to Amazônia is an even greater challenge, but we can see that the Brazilian government is dedicated to the task, as is the government of Pará. We are very happy that this event will take place here," he stated.

Architect Olmo Borges Xavier, projects director at the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Brazilian government, detailed that this week is the moment to “endorse” Brasil’s plans for the conference logistics. Xavier pointed out that COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan, is a key reference for the Brazilian project.

“The visit has been very important because last year we started to think about the construction of the Blue Zone (the conference’s official area) and the Green Zone (parallel events area) using the textual inputs as reference. Since the COP in Baku we have had a clearer idea of what a good project looks like. This mission is helping us to verify that our plan responds to the needs of such an event,” Xavier explained.

On the second day of technical visits, the UN mission also visited hotels and analyzed the city’s hotel network. The Brazilian government, in partnership with local administrations, plans to create 26,000 new beds to receive the public attending COP30 discussions.

The field visits of UNFCCC experts and technicians from the Federal and local governments will continue until January 24, allowing them to verify the logistical plans for transportation, public security, and public health.

The mission aims to discuss preparations for COP30 Amazônia. Technical visits are part of the routine in preparation for the COPs, occurring multiple times throughout the year in the countries hosting the Conference.
