Ana Toni, COP30 CEO, stressed that Latin America is a crucial region to address climate change and accelerate the implementation of international environmental plans and agreements. As the representative of the Presidency, Toni is leading the negotiations and discussions at the Panama Climate Week, a conference organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The conference began on Monday, the 19th, and runs through Friday, the 23rd.

"This meeting is special because it's taking place in Latin America, and we're collaborating closely. We’ve felt tremendous support from all negotiators, especially those from Latin America, for COP30, Brasil’s presidency, and our efforts to accelerate implementation," the CEO said in an exclusive interview with the COP30 website.

Climate Week is focused primarily on adaptation and mitigation strategies to confront climate change. In this context, Latin America offers valuable solutions against the climate crisis, yet it also suffers from its impacts.

"Latin America is part of the climate solution. It’s a region endowed with natural resources, including energy, forests, and agriculture. However, we also know that Latin America is highly vulnerable to climate change and faces droughts, floods, and heat waves,” she added.

The forum in Panama is preparation for the upcoming UNFCCC Climate Week on the African continent in the second half of the year, and the agreement to be reached at COP30.

On Wednesday, May 21, the conference presidency will co-host one of its most important events, the Implementation Forum. The agenda includes a series of discussions and the launch of the “Mutirão dos Mutirões” (collective efforts) — a call to the international community to tackle climate change.
